There are self-service machines in almost every subway station, where you can purchase the pass or load it with some bucks.

You will be asked to type a zip code and if you are not an American, just type 10001 and will be able to buy your card normally.

Alternatively, you can also buy the ticket directly from an employee of the company, but this option is not available in all subway stations.

You can pay for the MetroCard in cash or using credit card enabled for international transactions.

Buying the card is very simple, you just need to follow the procedures above listed and if can’t do it on your own, seek assistance from staff.

Subways run every 2 to 5 minutes during rush hour, every 10 to 15 minutes during the day and every 20 minutes at night.

The peak hours are usually on weekdays between 7:30 and 09:30 am and 4:30 and 6:30 pm.

Always remember to follow the rules and don’t stand in front of the turnstile trying to find your MetroCard as it is not something new Yorkers would do.

The Unlimited Ride MetroCard is valid for 7 consecutive days and it is an excellent investment for those who are planning to stay for more than 4 days in New York.

Buying the MetroCard will give you a significative freedom and you will also save a lot of money.

Furthermore, if you are planning to stay less than 4 days in the city, you should analyze your itinerary, because in these few days you may choose to use other means of transportation and walk a lot and paying for single rides might be better.

For large groups of 3 or 4 people, always analyze the possibility of taking taxis or Uber regularly as it might be cheapier and more convenient.

In this case, the best option is to pay-per-ride whenever you need to use the subway system but remember that at peak times the subway is always the best option because it is able to avoid traffic jams!
