In fact, it is so amazing that we traveled to the region for the third time with the intention to visit this waterfall since we hadn’t before. Was it worth? Yes, absolutely!

 The Mosquito Waterfall is a must-see attraction of Chapada Diamantina and you will understand why in this post.

The Mosquito Waterfall is simply stunning and the combination of the 60 m height waterfall with rocks and vegetation creates a completely unique and magical scenario.

It is impossible to describe the excitement to visit a place like this with words, but I believe that the photos depict at least part of the beauty and magic of the waterfall.

And do you know what the best part is? The hiking trail that takes visitors to the Mosquito Waterfall lasts only 20 minutes, which makes of it one of the easiest trails in Chapada Diamantina.

Although it is a short trail, it is very intense, especially on the way back which is uphill. So, those who have walking restrictions or heart problems should be aware of that fact!

If this is not your case, do not even think twice and put the Mosquito Waterfall in your travel itinerary, because it is totally worth a visit.

 
HOW TO GET IN MOSQUITO WATERFALL

Getting in Mosquito Waterfall is very simple, especially if you are driving. From Lençóis, just follows the BR 242 to the entrance marked with this sign above.

From Lençóis, it will take you only 8 km to reach this entrance and make sure you are driving the direction towards Salvador.

From this entry, you should drive for more 13 km until you reach Fazenda Santo Antonio, which houses the wonderful waterfall.

During the way, you will be able to admire wonderful angles of the hills of the Chapada Diamantina …

The road is well maintained and signposted, so you should have no problem.

After traveling 13 km you will arrive at Fazenda Santo Antonio. There, you must pay the ticket, which costs R$ 15,00 (around 6 U$D) and drive for more 6 km until the entrance of the Mosquito Waterfall trail.

You will arrive in the parking lot and there you should just park the car and follow the trail to the waterfall.

If like us, you plan to visit the waterfall in the morning, you can have lunch when you get back from the waterfall.

If you want to eat in the restaurant at the farm, make sure your order your food on your way to the waterfall, otherwise, they will not be able to cook for you when you get back.

The food is excellent, and the prices are fair, so all you need to worry about is to admire the incredible views and recover your energies.

You can visit it as a day trip from Dubrovnik or in a complete itinerary around the Balkans, just make sure you plan a trip to Kravice Falls, which is also called the “Little Iguaçu”, such is the resemblance to the beauty of the park.

Some also say that Kravice Falls looks like the famous Plitvice Lakes National Park and we must warn that, despite being much smaller, in many ways it is actually more interesting than the park in Croatia!

Why? The stunning beauty of this park is really unbeatable, but best of all is being able to swim in the wonderful lake and waterfalls, which is impossible to do in Plitvice.

So I think you already have enough reasons to be enchanted by the place and to visit Bosnia, isn’t it? If still in doubt, check out the full post with reasons why you should visit the country.

Kravice Falls is situated a convenient area near the border with Croatia and only 40 km away from Mostar.

Also, it is easy to access if you are coming from popular cities around, such as Dubrovnik and the Makarska Riviera.

There, you will find several waterfalls and a nice lake with warm temperature, especially during the hot summer.

In addition, there is a restaurant serving drinks, food, and snacks on the river which makes the visit even more enjoyable!

The waterfalls derive from Trebizat River, they are 120 meters wide and the highest waterfall has the height of 25 meters, thus no wonder it was declared a natural phenomenon that is under the protection of the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina?

The Kravice Falls is very popular among tourists and locals, especially in the summer and spring, when the water temperature is pleasant and you can dive and raft nearby.

So, do expect to have company during your visit, unless you arrive there very early to take pictures and get a more exclusive different experience!

There, it is very common to find local Muslims and women bathing wearing the burqa, but also tourists with normal swimsuits.

So do not worry about your swimsuit because there aren’t prohibitions in terms of dress- code, but it’s always good to be careful not to be disrespectful.

HOW MUCH COST AND HOW TO GET TO KRAVICE WATERFALLS

You can get there easily by car or taxi, and you can park inside the park at no extra cost.

However, renting a car to explore not only Bosnia but also the Balkans is the best idea, in my opinion as you will be able to explore further

We read some reports of tourists who had trouble getting there using Google Maps, but we used the internet on the phone and Waze app and could find the attraction without major problems.

From the car parking, you pay an entry and need to walk down a trail for about 15 minutes, but the hiking trail is not hard unless you have a mobility issue.

Entrance to the park costs 2 euros for adults and 1,5 for student and consumption there is very cheap – a snack costs about 4 euros and water 1 euro.

Anyway, the most important thing to keep in mind is to visit this paradise that is still not as well known by tourists!

When we published the pictures of our trip on Instagram and later with the success of the post about why you should visit Bosnia and Herzegovina, many people asked if it was safe to travel to Bosnia and Herzegovina.  

So we decided to write about our own personal perceptions combining with some travel precautions suggested by some governments such as the UK, USA, and Canada, for example.

To begin with, we must say that we perfectly understand your concern, after all, the country has a long history of political and social instability that culminated in a very serious civil war in the 90s and ruined the internal and external moral of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

And there is no way to deny that many of us grew up with hearing the terrible news of the genocides that took place there, therefore it is completely normal to feel insecure about visiting the country.

After all, the mass media still focuses on the turbulent past, the constantly changing borders and also the presence of the United Nations troops still in order to ensure compliance with the peace agreements.

But are those healed wounds or is it still a dangerous country to visit?

MY PERCEPTIONS OF BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

It may seem a joke, but the truth is that we felt much safer there than in my own country, Brazil.

We were two women traveling by car without any local accompanying and even though we did not feel unsafe not even for a second.

We even read some reports of corruption by the highway police but we were actually stopped by them a few times and had no problem at all.

In fact, everyone seemed very willing to help and we did not witness those typical attitudes of people trying to take advantage of tourists at any cost.

We can not ignore that the past and also the tension that unfortunately is still causing problems to the different cultural groups that inhabit the country, however, my opinion is that Bosnia currently can give us lessons on how to harmoniously coexist with the different.

We really admired the inflexibility of the Bosnians on regard of not allowing everybody to forget the past in order to avoid confrontations in the future and what I saw there was a modern society with available wi-fi connectivity in public areas, English speaker people and reasonable of health and economic standards.

Visiting Bosnia was, for us, a great learning experience of how little we know about the world and how we underestimate such places.

IS BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA SAFE FOR WOMEN?

Moreover, we can say that as women we had no problem traveling by ourselves in Bosnia, especially comparing with Croatia, where we had some inconveniences.

In Croatia, when we stopped to fuel the car, the attendants were super amazed at two women driving alone and always tried to flirt with us, but ironically this has never happened in Bosnia!

Also, although the greatest part of the population is Muslim in Bosnian, they are much more liberal than most countries that follow Islam and that means you will find few women with the veil and many wearing regular western clothes.

So your conventional clothing will be no problem there except to visit some religious attractions and in this case will be offered the veil to cover your head and shoulders and long skirt to cover your legs

So, don’t hesitate and plan a trip to the country, but remember to always keep the regular precautions

TRAVEL PRECAUTIONS SUGGESTED BY GOVERNMENTS

The greatest dangers of Bosnia, listed by official agencies, are as follows:

Buried Mines

The latest estimative made in 2010 indicates that there are 11 000 minefields and approximately over 220 thousand active landmines in Bosnia.

Despite being a scary information, it is important to clarify that most urban areas were clean and the tourist areas are all free from any danger.

However, you should be warned that unpaved roads, abandoned buildings, and some roads are still dangerous.

So do your part and don’t walk in old conflict areas, including some of the suburbs surrounding Sarajevo, since this area has a particularly high number of landmines.

This is a way to respect the painful history of the country and also stay away from trouble!

Theft and robbery

As in all countries, there is a risk of theft and robbery, especially in urban centers.

So take the necessary precautions to avoid dangerous situations and be careful with your belongings.

Driving in Bosnia and road conditions

There is no denying that, compared with other European countries, the road conditions in Bosnia are worst.

Currently, there are about forty kilometers of four-lane highways across the country and some roads are narrow, so driving at night can also be tricky.

MY CONCLUSION

Our goal with this post was to expose our sincere perceptions (which is actually the best possible) and also alert to the problems that can be found there.

Every trip is unique and each one of us might have different experiences, but our suggestion is that you shouldnt hesitate to visit Bosnia and Herzegovina, but take every possible precaution to avoid problems, as you would anywhere else in the world!
